Technology News & Updates

Tesla's Cybertruck may be approaching the end of its production run as CEO Elon Musk signals plans to shift manufacturing priorities toward the company's self-driving Cybercab.

According to a BBC News report, Musk stated that Tesla plans to wind down Cybertruck production at its Texas manufacturing facility next year to make additional room for Cybercab production.

Although Tesla has not formally clarified whether Cybertruck manufacturing will end completely or move to another facility, comments from Musk and members of the engineering team suggest the vehicle could be discontinued.

Tesla Shifts Its Focus Toward Autonomous Vehicles

Tesla's decision comes as the company continues developing its autonomous vehicle technology.

The Cybercab is designed as a self-driving vehicle and represents a different direction from the Cybertruck, which was developed as an electric pickup truck.

Wes Morrill, the lead engineer behind the Cybertruck project, commented on the development through the social media platform X.

Morrill described the Cybertruck as an important technology development platform, explaining that technology developed for the vehicle would continue through the Cybercab project.

Musk also responded to a social media post discussing the Cybertruck's possible discontinuation, appearing to confirm the news while stating that existing Cybertrucks would remain on the road for years to come.

A Unique Vehicle With a Complicated History

Tesla first introduced the Cybertruck concept in 2019.

The vehicle attracted significant attention because of its unusual angular design and stainless-steel exterior, which differed considerably from traditional pickup trucks.

During its original unveiling, Tesla attempted to demonstrate the durability of the Cybertruck's windows. However, the glass cracked during the live demonstration.

Despite the incident, Musk reported approximately 146,000 orders shortly after the vehicle's introduction.

Production delays followed, and the Cybertruck did not officially launch until 2023.

Sales Challenges and Vehicle Recalls

Although the Cybertruck developed a dedicated following, sales reportedly fell short of expectations.

The vehicle also experienced several recalls.

One significant recall in 2025 affected more than 46,000 Cybertrucks because of concerns that exterior trim components could detach from the vehicle.

Pricing was another factor affecting the Cybertruck's position in the pickup truck market.

At launch, higher-equipped versions were priced around $61,000, according to the BBC report.

By 2026, the high-performance Cyberbeast model carried a price of approximately $102,000.

These prices placed the Cybertruck in competition with other premium electric trucks and traditional pickup trucks.

What Happens to Existing Cybertrucks?

Tesla has not announced that existing Cybertruck vehicles will be removed from service.

Musk indicated that the current fleet would continue operating for years.

However, questions remain about whether the company will manufacture additional Cybertrucks at another location or end production entirely.

Tesla has not provided a detailed public timetable for a complete discontinuation.

What's Next for Tesla?

Tesla's planned manufacturing changes indicate an increasing emphasis on autonomous transportation.

The Cybercab is intended to operate using Tesla's self-driving technology, although its commercial deployment and regulatory requirements remain important factors in the project's future.

Technology and engineering developments from the Cybertruck program may also contribute to Tesla's future vehicles.

For now, the Cybertruck's long-term production future remains uncertain, but Tesla's plans suggest that autonomous vehicles are becoming a larger part of the company's manufacturing strategy.
