Are we too image conscious? I think the Olympics are bringing this topic to light. Appearance is everything these days – especially among women. The female athletes at the games are being criticized for how they look – from Gabby Douglas’ hair, to American weightlifter Holley Mangold, who tips the scales at 346 pounds. She’s the heaviest woman at the London Olympics. Some female swimmers are being
called “butch” – and there are articles about the hottest female athletes. This emphasis on image has been blamed for a rise in eating disorders.
How did we get to this point? Why aren’t men judged by the same standards? And women do you feel pressure to look a certain way – and where is the pressure coming from?
