The television industry has been abuzz about ABC’s ongoing success against NBC in the morning show ratings wars. ABC’s Good Morning America beat out NBC’s Today show in weekly ratings for the first time in 16 years last month, and pulled off the feat twice again since.
But ABC is also making gains on the nightly news front. Last week, the network’s “World News with Diane Sawyer” closed the gap with “NBC Nightly News” to halve the margin from one year ago, putting NBC’s lead at its narrowest since 2009. Robin Roberts’ interview with President Obama last week certainly aided ratings, but ABC’s numbers show sustained progress for the network.
The conventional wisdom in TV news-land is that though NBC leads, ABC is biting at its heels. 30 Rock is still on top — “Nightly News” leads “World News” by over a million total viewers, in fact — but they’re certainly feeling that biting now.
